Hello,

I have tried installing Mountain Lion DP 3 on a parallels VM and have not been successful at it, I tried installing from a DVD and from the .dmg file itself and all I get is as far as loading the background image but at no point the installation screen comes up, it just stays there. I got the same file and CD tried installing it directly over Snow Leopard and it worked fine.

Does anyone has any ideas? i would like to try it 1st before going for a full installation over snow leopard since when I tried DP 1 it did not go too well.

Parallels (and VMware Fusion, for that matter) are ONLY for installing a windoze OS. They have nothing to do with the Mac OS. If you want to run 2 Mac OS, you're going to have to create a separate partition. I have no plans to do this (I'm keeping only Snow Leopard, for now), so someone else will have to give you more information, or you can use Google to find that yourself.

I found this link by Googling mac os x "dual boot lion and snow leopard": http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/mastercla ... id=3332727

Mountain Lion won't be released until July, or thereabouts, so that's why I didn't use that as one of my Google keywords. We have a whole thread devoted to Mountain Lion, and you should refer to that for information, and to post any additional questions regarding what you should do. Be sure to read the information that's already been shared so you don't ask something that's already been answered. The bottom line, here, is that Parallels is of no use to install a Mac OS; ONLY a windoze OS. :)

I found this link by using the Advanced Search (button just below the C4M banner), typing in my keywords (mountain lion), choosing "Topic Titles" and then clicking the Search button at the bottom of the page.

I hate to disagree with HM (which is insanely rare, she is usually spot-friggin-on), but the latest version of Pareelles, VMWare, and even VirtualBox all run Mac OS VMs just fine. I use Mac VMs daily to separate my production environment from my development and testing environments. I personally prefer VMWare, so I can't speak directly to the OPs issues with Parellels, but I've had zero issues running Mount Lion DP3 on VMWare (I also have a 10.7.4 DP3 VM that's running well too).

Thanks, laughing.goblin! I appreciate the chance to learn new info, especially from someone I trust. :thumb: So, sft106, listen to laughing.goblin...my info was out of date (I'm still running Snow Leopard and not the least bit interested in Lion...yet). :D

It works fine for me.
When you make the VM it can't figure out the OS bu the DMG so choose Mac OS X manually in the dropbox.
On the next screen, check the box "Customize settings before installation."
You should give it 4GB+ of RAM (General tab) if you can and 512+MB of video memory (Hardware > Video.)
Close the options box and continue like normal.

I experienced the same problem. I was able to install Mountain Lion DP2 with Parallels with no problem, but when I tried to install DP3, it just either freezes on the opening screen (grey apple logo), or creates a small VM, and then says that it doesn't have an operating screen.

That hang is most likely the check for sufficient RAM failing. Follow the instructions to change the settings BEFORE installing and you can get it to work. I tried it without changing those settings and got the same problem you did so the settings change is a must.

Instructions again but with all steps...
>> make a new VM [file > new]
>> select - Install Windows or another OS from DVD or image file
>> choose the DMG of Mountain Lion, it will fail to recognize the OS and pop up a window
>> Choose Mac OS X from the dropdown and click [OK]

It will likely hang for a while on the first boot after install but it works fine after that.

There was a specific "oops" version of VMWare Fusion that slipped out which allowed installing non-server versions of Leopard and Snow Leopard... Version 4.1.0... After that they "fixed" it to where all you can install (non-server) is Lion (and I guess ML).

I have installed the DP4 on a Parallels VM with the latest version of Parallels and it work fine for me.
I change the size of the memory to upgrade from the defalut.
