Foundation ActionScript Animation: Making Things Move!
Image
Author: Keith Peters
Publisher: friends of ED
Year: 2005
Pages: 488
ISBN: 1590595181
Sure you can animate using motion tweens, in fact we\'ll help you do that with our Flash Cartoon Animation book, but isn\'t there something extra special in making things move with just a few lines of code? In this book Keith Peters guides us through some basic animation theory and then demystifies the math and physics behind creating realistic animation, looking at trigonometry, velocity and acceleration, and bouncing & friction. This book will teach you how to use Flash ActionScript to move the objects in your movies, rather than letting Flashs tween engine do it for you. The benefit of this is smaller, more realistic, more dynamic interactive movies that seem to come alive on your screen. Almost all of the code featured in this book will work fine in either Flash MX 2004 or Flash 8, and with a few minor adjustments, most of it can even be applied to Flash MX. Although the text covers many advanced math and physics concepts, making for very realistic motion, theres no need to worry, even if youre a relative newcomer to programming and the last math class you took was in high school (and even if you barely remember that!). This book first covers everything you need to know to get started: the principles of animation, and the basics of ActionScript, trigonometry, and Flash rendering methods. Youll work your way slowly from using code to move a single object across the screen to creating complex systems that really push Flashs capabilities with topics covered including collision detection, particle attraction, and kinematics. The book concludes with looking at 3D animation techniques, including building a basic 3D engine, 3D lines, fills and solids, and matrix math. Once you come to grips with the ideas presented here, youll find yourself creating all manner of exciting animations and games!

Flash 8: Projects for Learning Animation and Interactivity
Image
Author: Rich Shupe
Publisher: O\'Reilly Media
Year: 2006
Pages: 358
ISBN: 0596102232
Macromedia Flash is fast becoming the Web\'s most widely used platform for creating rich media with animation and motion graphics, but mastering Flash isn\'t easy. Most entry-level books teach through simple examples that concentrate on either animation or scripting, but rarely both together. To get the most from Flash 8, you not only need to be proficient in programming/interface design, you need the creativity for story telling and the artistic insights to design fluid animation. Flash 8: Projects for Learning Animation and Interactivity teaches Flash design rather than simply Flash itself. With a standalone series of walkthroughs and tutorials for Flash beginners coming from a graphics field, this book teaches Flash in the context of real-world projects. Rather than learn a Flash tool for the sake of it, you learn which areas of Flash are important, and which are less used, simply by seeing how typical content is actually created. And rather than a text-heavy approach, this graphically rich book leads you through hands-on examples by illustration. Each project in the book starts with goals and broad sketches before moving to design and scripting. This helps you understand design intent-the why of the process-rather than just learning the interfaces and the how of it all. Along the way, you\'ll create Flash content that includes traditional animation techniques (as seen in full-length animated features), and ActionScript-based interactive animation, such as custom web site interface designs. You also learn how to combine both traditional animation techniques and ActionScript to create feature-rich Flash assets from the ground up. Co-authored by educational developers with years of experience creating compelling content, interfaces, and applications, Flash 8: Projects for Learning Animation and Interactivity offers a content-driven approach that is also inspiration-driven. You learn because you\'re accomplishing something tangible, not because you think you need to know how a tool works.

Learn Programming with Flash MX
Image
Author: Kristian Besley
Publisher: friends of ED
Year: 2003
Pages: 480
ISBN: 1590592417
Learn Programming with Flash MX employs a truly unique class-based approach to learning with the goal of establishing core, generic-programming skills. Each chapter represents a discrete lesson covering a distinct topic of programming with ActionScript. In each 'class' we smoothly blend theory and practice with plentiful practical examples, and a class project that runs through the book to reinforce the learning in an integrated, real-world context, using Flash MX as the illustrative vehicle. This book also addresses the shortfall in solid programming knowledge in significant segments of the web design community – specifically, traditional web designers and Flash users with no exposure to the programming world. It also assumes that the reader is a Flash novice, so if you're coming to Flash completely from scratch, this book will give you a broad and solid introduction enabling you to create aesthetically pleasing, well laid-out content glued together with robust coding techniques. Learn Programming with Flash MX covers the fundamental programming principles and skills that every programmer needs to master in order to create well-structured and efficient code to a professional standard.

Here is an essential AS 3 book:

Object-Oriented Actionscript 3.0

Image

Author: Peter Elst, Sas Jacobs, Todd Yard
Publisher: Friends of Ed
Year: 2007
Pages: 640
ISBN: 1-59059-845-8

* Learn object-oriented programming in actionscript 3.0
* Covers both the Flash and Flex environments
* Includes design patterns, custom frameworks, data binding, and other crucial techniques

Object-oriented programming (OOP) is something that is usually considered a black art for hardcore programmers, not a topic of conversation for Flash developers. However, when adobe introduced actionscript 3.0 to the mix, it changed everything. actionscript 3.0 is much more powerful than previous versions, allowing Flash developers to produce robust object-oriented applications. but with that power comes great responsibilityOOP is now a requirement, rather than optional, and there are new things to learn.

But never fearthis book, based on the ever-popular Object-Oriented ActionScript for Flash 8, provides you all you need to delve into the world of OOP with confidence, whether you are using the Flash IDE, Flex builder, or even command-line tools for your development work.

First, you are taken gently through all the principles of OOP that you need to know, and then given a guide to designing and implementing applications in actionscript 3.0. Next, we step up a gear, showing you the Flex builder development environment and teaching about creating reusable, extensible component frameworksmanager classes, animation and effects classes, UI widgets, and more. lastly, we look at some more advanced topics such as communication between Flash and the browser and Web services. case studies are included that apply the knowledge presented, giving you real-world projects to learn from and adapt for use in your own work.

Mastering object-oriented programming is essential for modern Flash development, and Object-Oriented ActionScript 3.0 is the only guide you'll need.

In CS3 flash is a completely different animal if you are coding in AS3, but flash allows you to go back to AS2 if you prefer.
